Is a Real Orgasm by Asphyxiation Suicide or Self Harm?
Asphyxia (from Greek meaning ‘without pulse’, or ‘heartbeat’) is a condition of severely deficient supply of oxygen to the body that arises from being unable to breathe normally. An example of asphyxia is choking. Asphyxia causes generalized hypoxia, which primarily affects the tissues and organs.

A simple explanation is that lack of oxygen can cause lightheadedness, reducing inhibitions and enhancing the sexual experience. Masochistic and castration fantasies are common and other psychological factors also play a role.
In my opinion auto erotic asphyxiation is not suicide or self harm, but an impulse to experience a breathless orgasm. During this dangerous act of asphyxia death is commonly accidental. One researcher estimates there are at least 50 deaths annually nationwide and the victims are mostly young males.
Auto erotic asphyxiation came about (no pun intended) the observation of men when hung in execution they often displayed an erection and sometimes ejaculation occurred.
No doubt you have heard that on June 4, 2009, David Carradine was found dead in his room in central Bangkok, A police official said David was found hanging by a rope in the room’s closet and it was also reported that his body was found curled up in the wardrobe with a shoelace tied around his neck and genitals.
According to ex-wife Marina Anderson there was a dark and intense side to David. Previously in her divorce filing she had claimed that “It was the continuation of abhorrent and deviant sexual behavior which was potentially deadly.”
This is how I choose to remember David.
